Dinner
Nina
After the nightâs show, Nina went to the mess hall to eat with the other dancers. Just like before, Lola and Nina had to sit at a table by themselves. Nina gave herself a double portion of everything. When she smelled the food, she realized that sheâd skipped dinner last night and hadnât eaten all day. Her stomach was trying to eat itself.
As she was finishing up, an announcement came over the intercom.
âFolks, weâre going to need to pick up some new passengers on Intara. Itâll add another day to our trip. The extra day will be offered gratis. The ship that was supposed to pick them up is down for repairs and maintenance, so weâve got to fly this small part of their route. Itâll cause minimal delays.â
Nina didnât know if anybody would be mad. The pleasure ship was all about having fun, and Nina, as guest, would love an extra day of fun.
The room filled with chatter as the dancers discussed the possibility of landing on Intara.
Shanna said loudly, âI heard that Intara has extremely tall warriors with almost white hair and glowing skin, some of the most attractive males in the known universe.â She practically purred with pleasure. âMaybe I should snag one. Iâve heard that they have a barbaric mating ritual. A woman just puts a yellow stripe on her outfit to indicate that sheâs ready to mate, and they just whisk her away. Isnât that the craziest thing?â
Ninaâs eyes widened as she heard the description of the Intaran warriors. They sounded like the alien in her dream. Was he Intaran? What would that even mean?
Nina looked back at Shanna, and she was looking straight at Nina with a cruel smile on her lips. Nina shivered involuntarily. Shannaâs smile was one of the scariest things that sheâd ever seen.
âI heard that they just take their women away, and they lock them up. They never see the outside world again. They donât have many Intaran women, you see, and theyâve got to take alien women in. They mate them in space, and they mate them on their planet, too. They are mercenaries or space marines, and a lot of them travel frequently. Thatâs why they have their ritual. Itâs an ancient custom thatâs lasted for centuries.â A pretty red-headed dancer that Nina didnât know very well was speaking. âI would never put a stripe on my outfit on Intara. Iâm too independent.â
âI donât know,â another dancer said. Nina thought she was named Ariadne, but she wasnât sure. âI wouldnât mind shacking up with some hot Intaran.â
âEven if you donât mate for life, theyâre always down for a good time, if you know what I mean. They donât have many woman, so there are plenty that hang around the spaceship docks. Maybe weâll meet a couple,â Stefania said. She winked at the group.
Nina realized that she was staring, so she stood with her tray and put it away. Intara didnât sound like a world that sheâd want to visit.
